What is your current daily intake of added sugar? 6, 10, 15, 20, 30, 58? Anything above 6 is too high!

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends 5% of daily calorie intake, that is, about 6 teaspoons of added sugar a day.

Please consider your intake of added sugar, as a child or adult, of products containing added sugar which can lead to serious health issues including tooth decay, obesity and other chronic diseases such as heart diseases, Type 2 diabetes and liver diseases.

On average, the added sugar in items such as soft drinks – 10-12 teaspoons , coffee & tea – depends on what you add per cup, alcohol , sweets, pan cakes & syrup – 6-10 teaspoons, slice of carrot cake – 8 plus teaspoons an average slice. Sure they all taste great, but do you want the consequences??.

NOTE : Natural sugar as found in fresh fruit is OK.

Example: A child or adult’s daily meals and drinks may include a sugary cereal for breakfast (average 4-5 teaspoons), 1 can of soft drink a day ( say 10 -12 teaspoons) , 2 coffees or tea with 2 teaspoons each ( 4 teaspoons), slice of carrot cake or a muffin a day ( average 10 teaspoons) EQUALS a total of approximately 30 teaspoons of unnecessary added sugar a day. WOW , that’s danger signs for that persons current and future health.

A recommended alternative to a chocolate bar or a takeout would be to cut and pack some fresh carrots, cucumbers, celery, lettuce etc….. or boil some corn that you can have in the refrigerator or lunch box to enjoy without any added sugar.

Please take a few minutes to check your level of added sugar intake and adjust your intake, as necessary for a healthier life.

Also, If you have children, please assist them with this very important calculation.

The following sites have calculators, ideas and examples of food and drink alternatives. Sugarbyhalf have various meal menu’s to reduce your intake of added sugar for a healthier and happier life. Also use our Savings Calculator.
